Nakhon Si Thammarat

Nakhon Si Thammarat is provincial capital city of the Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, locates about 610 km south of Bangkok, on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula. The city was the governmental centre of Southern Thailand during most of its history.
Nakhon Si Thammarat is one of the “eldest” cities of Thailand, previously the Kingdom of Ligor, and remains a lot of architectural relics and ruins of historical significance.

Nakhon Si Thammarat was also a major trading centre, well-known to merchants from the Indian, Arabic, Champa states, Dvaravati, and later joint by merchants from British, Portuguese and Dutch empires. Besides its great history, Nakhon Si Thammarat also possesses many pristine beaches as well as two national parks with verdant jungles, which are abundant of luxuriant vegetation, beautiful waterfalls, and thriving wildlife. Nakhon Si Thammarat city has many Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu temples and is an ideal place where you can see a performance of Thai nǎng tàlung, featuring handmade shadow puppets, a famous traditional art of the region.

The province is on the east coast of the Gulf of Thailand and is surrounded by Surat Thani in the north, Phattalung and Songkhla in the south and Krabi in the west.

Most of mountainous areas of Nakhon Si Thammarat are covered with substantial forest, including the outstanding Khao Luang National Park, while the attractive coastal villages here are great for camping. The province is a good place to spend a couple of days staying.
