Khon Kaen

Khon Kaen is the capital of Khon Kaen Province and a part of Isan’s “big four” cities. Khon Kaen locates on the Khorat Plateau, in the central-northwestern area of North East of Thailand, about 390 kilometres from Bangkok.

The city was established just more than two hundred years ago during the reign of King Rama I. This place, due to its central location was the gathering place of various natural phenomena and cultures. The city is also where the archaeologists found the fossils which are evidence of a “kingdom” ruled by dinosaurs millions of years ago. During the pre-historical period, the area was inhabited by people from various cultures, until being invaded by the ancient Khmer Empire in the 12th century. The harmony of ancient cultures, traditions, history, and relics have all contributed to shaping the life of residents and culture of Khon Kaen nowadays.

Khon Kaen plays a very important role in economy and culture of the region and is one of the major cities under Thailand's National Economic and Social Plan, along with Chiang Mai, Songkhla, Nakhon Ratchasima and Chonburi. A famous speciality of Khon Kean is the high-quality silk that is produced by the residents here.

Khon Kaen is one of the fastest-growing areas in Thailand. Khon Kaen has been nominated by the government as the export centre for the trade over the Indo-China Region. Since the city’s largest shopping mall Central Plaza was inaugurated in 2015, Khon Kaen has witnessed a big change with a lot of restaurants, bars, and shops... The development in tourism has made Khon Kaen the desired destination to tourists, both domestic and international ones. Khon Kaen is also home to the largest university in the northeast, Khon Kaen University.
