Stork Island

Stork Island, also known as Dao Co, located in Chi Lang Nam Commune, Thanh Mien District, Hai Duong Province. Lying in a large crystal clear An Duong lake, this eco-tourism site which is famous for its stunning natural beauty and peaceful surroundings attracts many tourists when traveling Vietnam.

Stork Island is said to appear after a great flood that made the dyke of the Red River broken in the 15th century. Formerly, this An Duong lake area was a sunken field where there was a raised mound. When the flood happened, around the high mound in the middle of the low-lying fields appeared giant swirls of water and formed a large lake. Then years after years, this place became the home of hundreds and thousands of storks. With unique natural landscapes, local authorities and people propose to build a natural reserve and the name of Stork Island (also called Chi Lang Nam Island) appeared and gradually became a famous eco-tourist area in Hai Duong province.

With a total area of over 30,6 ha, Stork Island has an extremely diverse fauna and flora ecosystem with more than 170 species on both the island and the lake bed. This is home mainly to over 16,000 white storks and 6,000-night herons. There are many species of precious storks or water birds such as the green-backed cauldron, the gray cauldron, the star cauldron, gray herons, kingfishers,... An Duong lake is also the residence of many valuable fishes such as sea bass, eel, flounder, catfish, carp, fruit... or turtle, shrimp, crab...

Coming to Stork Island, you will have a chance to see the stunning view with the green bamboo trees, thousands of white stork wings on An Duong Lake and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere. The best time to visit here is from September to April every year because this is the time when thousands of storks, herons and birds flock to the island to feed and lay eggs. You will be really excited to see and get close to young storks with immature legs on soft bamboo branches. Especially, at sunset, the flock of storks calls each other to return home which creates a picturesque scenery. Other popular activities at Stork Island are riding a bike to explore the authentic village and have local interaction with the people living here, taking part in the farming and gardening activities, staying at a homestay to learn more about the traditional culture and playing folk games organized by the friendly host.
