Sa Dec

Sa Dec is a town in Dong Thap Province in southern Vietnam, about 140km southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. Lies in the center of the Mekong Delta on the bank of the Upper Mekong River, it is a river port town, an agricultural, industrial, and trading center of the area. Sa Dec has a population of approximately 110,000 people including 3 groups: Hoa (Chinese), Viet, and Khmer. Nowadays, Sa Dec is pretty commonplace for tourists who are attracted by the lush natural beauty of the land and the city’s lovely aspects.

Sa Dec Flower Village

The tranquil Sa Dec is well-known for lovely streets, roads with green trees, majestic colonial villas, abundant orchards, and colorful flower markets. People here, like in other parts of the Mekong delta are easy-going and friendly.

Apart from being the capital tropical fruits, Sa Dec is famous for its flowers. Flowers and bonsai in many gardens around Sa Dec are very colorful and special, amongst the best of the Mekong Delta. Sa Dec flowers can be seen everywhere in the region and Ho Chi Minh City especially before the New Year.

Traveling to Sa Dec

The house of protagonist Huynh Thuy Le, described in “The Lover” by French writer Marguerite Duras is one of the old lovely colonial buildings and ancient houses in the area frequented by visitors. Other sites include the very busy, authentic market near the river, old French church, Kien An Cung temple, Phuoc Huong Pagoda, the Nurseries.

You can visit Sa Dec on 2-day trip or overnight cruises to Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City. Additionally, this place can also be conveniently combined in your journey to and from Phnom Penh.
