Hoang Su Phi

Hoang Su Phi, a district lies in the west of the mountainous province Ha Giang in the Northeast of Vietnam, about 110km from the provincial capital and 300km north of Hanoi. The district area is dominated by mountains and hills with deep ravines, lush jungle, and winding streams and rivers, creating some of the most breathtaking and splendid scenery in the northern mountainous area, in particular and in Viet Nam, in general.

The district is home to over 60,000 people of 13 ethnic minority groups including Hmong, Dzao, Tay, Nung, Dao, La Chi… who earn their living major by producing agriculture.

The Hoang Su Phi terraced fields, most notable in Ban Luoc, San Sa Ho, Ban Phung, Ho Thau, Nam Ty, and Thong Nguyen communes, are evidence of centuries of wet rice cultivation by ethnic minorities in the area.

Through generations and by hard-working, people here have gradually changed this whole difficult and poor region into a wonderful picture of the perfect beauty of the highland hills. In 2012, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam recognized the Hoang Su Phi Terraces as a national heritage site because of its values.

Here visitors looking to avoid the hordes can visit remote hill tribes, admire the impressive nature and immerse into local authentic culture and lifestyle. Trekking here is a great experience with many accesses to villages of diverse hill tribes groups with distinctive traditions.

Other activities include a home stay in local houses, eco-lodge retreat, take part in local festivals, volunteering, visits to traditional handicraft villages… Hoang Su Phi market is a wonderful chance for those who love to discover the local life and the unique culture of the ethnic group which is held every Sunday.

The best time to visit Hoang Su Phi is around the end of May and early Jun when people prepare their terrace for new crop and between September and October when the rice is ready to be harvest showing golden carpets on hill slopes. On the other time, Hoang Su Phi attracts people with impressive mountains and lush original forest, its rustic natural beauty, and colorful cultural diversity.
