Shwedagon Pagoda - Golden Pagoda located in Yangon city, on 114 -acre Singuttara Hill, is considered the most luxurious pagoda in the world. This thousand-year-old temple is located on the west side of Royal lake.
Shwedagon Pagoda is famous for being a golden Pagoda with 27 tons of gold and thousands of diamonds and gems used to decorate it. The pagoda has 4 main gates entering from 4 directions, in front of each gate, there are 2 guarding lion statues. In the temple premises, there is an area displaying golden Buddha statues, a place for Buddhist monks, nuns and tourists to come to worship and pray. The most outstanding feature of Shwedagon Pagoda is the golden tower inlaid with pure gold from the body to the top. The peak of the tower which is 99 meters high and surrounded by more than 1000 small towers, is studded with diamond, is a sacred symbol of the people of Myanmar. In addition, visitors cannot ignore the area where 8 statues are placed in 8 directions representing 7 days of the week.
It takes nearly 30 minutes by car or taxi from Yangon airport to get there. If your hotel is in the center of Yangon city, you can also walk to visit Shwedagon Pagoda.
The best time for you to visit Shwedagon Pagoda is from October to February next year, you should avoid the hot weather as well as the rainy season in Yangon. Tourists can spend half day or a day tour to visit shwe Dagon Pagoda and should not miss the time of sunrise or sunset when the temple is most shimmering.
