Wat Si Muang

Wat Si Muang, one of the most frequently visited worshipping sites in the heart of Vientiane, is well-known for giving people good luck and fortune. Being built in 1563, this busy temple sees a large number of visitors coming to making wishes and getting back with lots of offerings when their wishes become reality.

According to Laos people, there are several legends about Wat Si Muang. However, the most popular story is about a young pregnant woman named Si Muang sacrificing herself to satisfy the bad spirits. In general, the temple is separated by two halls including the empty front hall and the second hall with some Buddha statues. Right at the entrance of Wat Si Muang, you are welcomed by the statue of King Sisavang Vong, and stepping into the site, you will be impressed by its delicate interior. The carved golden pillars, brightly colorful ceiling friezes, and the artistic golden Buddha will leave you speechless.

Wat Si Muang is located right at the East of the Vientiane city center, on the road connecting the Bridge of Friendship. Vientiane has a tropical climate with 2 main distinct seasons: dry and wet. The averages temperature ranges from 24°C to 37°C. You can visit Wat Si Muang any time in a year, but it is good to come here in the early morning when the visitors are not crowded, and if possible, on the 14th of the lunar calendar – “Buddha Day” every month.
