Savannakhet

Savannakhet ( Lao: ສະ ຫວັນ ນະ ເຂດ) is a province in Central Laos. The capital of this province is the city of Kaysone Phomvihane. Being inhabited by approximately 1 million residents, Savannakhet is considered the largest province of Laos.

It is bordered by Khammuane province to the north, Saravane province to the south, Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces of Vietnam to the east, and the provinces of Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani of Thailand to the west.

Savannakhet is connected with Thailand's Mukdahan province by Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge and with Quang Tri of Vietnam by crossing Road 9 of the East-West Economic Corridor, which has just been inaugurated.

By visiting Savannakhet, you will be surprised by its mixture of Laos’s traditional culture and inherited French colonial architecture, and the calm, serene atmosphere of the town. The tourist activities of Savannakhet are blossoming and offer various eco-trekking programs not only inside the border of the province and its preserved forests but also other places of interest in neighboring districts. Over the last two decades, dinosaurs have become the theme of Savannakhet, with a Dinosaur Museum and decorations in the streets.

Like all Lao cities, Savannakhet is home to a wide range mixed population of Lao, Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese. The harmony of various cultures appears in the daily life of locals and also in other aspects of architecture, religion, and emotional life… In Savannakhet, you can visit the 2000-year-old temple Wat Inghang.

The climate in Savannakhet is pided into two distinct seasons: the dry season (from November to March)  and the rainy season (from April to October). The dry season is the best time to visit Savannakhet.

Savannakhet has an international airport, and flights from/to Noi Bai Airport and Tan Son Nhat Airport of Vietnam are operated.
