Oudomxay

Oudomxay is a mountainous province located in the Northwest of Laos with the capital Muang Xai. It is nearly 150 kilometers from Luang Namtha and 200 kilometers from Luang Prabang. The main terrain of Oudomxay is rugged mountains, green forests, and wild fields. Nowadays, 23 ethnic minorities reside in the area with different languages, lifestyles, and cultures. Among them, the most populated ones are the Hmong, Khmu, and lowland Laos.

Although most local people earn their living from growing plants and other agricultural products such as rice, corn, bamboo, sugarcane, etc., they have seen the chance to improve the economy in the tourism field. There are numerous attractions in Muang Xai that will leave you unforgettable memory including Nam Kat waterfall, That Phou Xay stupa, Chom Ong cave, Pha Kuang cave, Oudomxay museum, Ban Lue handicrafts center…
Besides, tourists have opportunities to take part in lots of exciting outdoor activities like cultural hiking, adventurous zip-lining, challenged trekking, and interesting elephant interacting. Moreover, The H’mong’s New Year celebration is held at the end of the harvest season in November or December every year, it offers a unique cultural experience, making it a memorable part of any visit to Laos.

It is very convenient to take a short flight or use a private car with a tour guide from Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, and Vientiane to reach Oudomxay. From other nearby destinations including Nong Khiaw, Phongsaly, and Huay Xai, the transfer on road is doable. To get around the area, tourists can use a car or slowly discover the local sites by bike. 
 
The moderate monsoon climate causes temperature variation during the year in Oudomxay. The average temperature is below in the dry season and above in the wet season. The best time to visit Oudomxay is months from October to February with cool weather and manageable humidity.
