Located on the banks of the mighty Mekong river in Khammouane province (Central Laos),
Thakhek is a small town famous for the peaceful countryside life among tourists, who are interested in nature and wilderness.
In the past, the region was popularly known as “Tha”, or “landing”. Traders from the north began entering here for business activities and they were called “khek”, or “guests”. Afterward, the name “Thakhek” which refers to “Guests’ landing” became the name of the town. Being the fourth largest city in the country, Thakhek was extremely developed by the French. You can see some remnants like houses and buildings in French architecture style while wandering around the neighborhood.
From Thakhek, it is very easy to do stunning trekking, explore the caves, cool off in the lake, visit some impressive temples, and walk to local villages. If you want to do something a bit more adventurous, try the rock-climbing on limestone rocks and stalactites run by Green Climbers Home to get a magnificent view of the region. The most attractive sites of the area include the Phu Hin Bun National Park, the gallery at the Nam Theun 2 visitors center, the Rock Viewpoint, Kong Lor Cave, Pha Fa Cave, Nong Thao Lake (Turtle Lake), Aen Cave, and the Falang.
Thakhek is conveniently reachable by private car from
Vientiane, Xieng Khouang,
Savannakhet, Attapeu, Paksan,
Salavan, and Sekong. To get around the small town, you can walk on foot, take a tuk-tuk, or ride a bike.
Thakhek has a tropical climate with the rainy season from June to August and the hottest months from late February to May. The best time to visit the town is during the dry season from October to early February when the weather is excellent for outdoor activities.
