According to a legend, Laos people believe that That Dam stupa is home to a dragon with 7 heads who protects Vientiane against the Siamese invasion. Nowadays, the holy dragon still sleeps silently inside the stupa.

People do not know exactly when That Dam was built. Over the centuries, the vegetation has overgrown the bricks and stones, so its nickname is “Black stupa” that preserves the relics of Buddhist or an important monk.
