Plain of Jar Site 3

Jar Site 3, also known as Hai Hin Lat Khai, is located near Phonsavan, the capital of Xiang Khouang Province (about 400 km northeast of Vientiane). Owning nearly 250 jars and 45 stone discs, Jar Site 3 is the least visited site in comparison with other sites of the famous Plain of Jars.

The jars here were carved from sandstone in different sizes and their ages are around 2,000 years old. According to legends and myths, the jars were used as wine cups for giants, water storages in the dry season, wine storage for royalty, and urns in burial rituals; although all of them are now empty. To get to Jar site 3, you have to walk around 10 minutes across rice paddies up a lush shady hill with some small stretches. From here, you will be awarded attractive views of the surrounding areas, green hillsides, and peaceful rural landscapes. Most tourists are impressed with this site because of its jars’ sizes and the location which bring them an authentic feeling.

Other attractions that can be listed in your trip to Phonsavan are Ban Naphia, Muang Khoun, Tham Piew Cave, and Ban Namkhampeng village.

Since Plain of Jar 3 is not far from Phonsavan (about 25 km), tourists can board on flight to Xiang Khouang Airport then take a private car to the site. Another option for an adventurous experience, you can rent a bike at any shop in Phonsavan, pick up a map, and cycle to the site.

Climate, the best time to visit

You can visit Plain of Jar Site 3 all year round due to the cooler weather than in other parts of the country. However, the wise time to visit the site is from October to February, when the weather is quite pleasant with comfortable humidity and less chance of rain which creates great conditions for outdoor activities here. If you wish to explore Jar Site 3 in the silent atmosphere with very few tourists, you should come here in the morning.
