Nam Ngum Lake

Located in the Keo-Oudom district around 90 kilometers from the capital Vientiane (Central Laos), Nam Ngum is the largest lake in Laos covering a total area of 370 square kilometers. Despite often being considered as the sea of Laos, the lake is actually a man-made site, created after the damming of Nam Ngum River in 1971. Surrounded by spectacular mountains and pristine forests, Nam Ngum Lake makes an interesting day trip from the hustle and bustle city.

On the way leading to Nam Ngum Lake, you can pay a visit to the authentic Hmong town of KM52, see the ancient Mon-Khmer Buddha images in Vang Sang, learn about the traditional technique of salt making at Ban Keun, and sample Laos’s snacks at Dong Mak Khai market. At Nam Ngum, the most favorite activity is getting a boat trip to cruise around the site and visit the small village of Na Nam with several traditional wooden houses acting as restaurants and basic guesthouses. At some optional stops along the route, you can get off the boat to swim in the cool water or enjoy a stroll around the area. In addition, it is also possible to lengthen the trip with the stops at some isolated regions like Don Keng Phou Vieng, Don Kok Khouan Kham, and Dansavanh Nam Ngum resort – a hotel and casino.

In recent years, heading for a trip to Nam Ngum Lake is very easy due to the development of the road systems. Nam Ngum Lake has tropical weather which is quite hot and humid throughout the year. The dry season is extremely hot and sees less chance of rainfall while the wet season is cooler but obviously encounters heavy rainfall. The best time to visit Nam Ngum Lake is months lasting from October to April.
