Muang Ngoi

Muang Ngoi, also known as Muang Ngoi Neua, is a small rural village located on the Nam Ou River in Northern Laos (around 70 km from Luang Prabang and 300 km from Vientiane). Only accessing permanent electricity in April 2013, it is one of the most low-key secluded villages in a stunning location, which has recently become a popular name among tourists all over the world.

Muang Ngoi attracts tourists with its eco-bungalows setting along the fantastic mountainous areas, breathtaking karts scenery, and interesting treks leading to the ethnic villages like Bana, Huay Sen, and Huay Bo. Numerous exciting activities that tourists can experience during their stay in Muang Ngoi are relaxing at Nam Ou river, exploring Tham Kang and Tham Pha Kaew that were used as bomb shelters during the war, hiking to the amazing lookout to get a glorious view of the town and witness some superb sunsets, taking the kayaking trip to the historic Ban Sopjam weaving village, and trying the traditional herbal sauna opened in the dry season.

From Nong Khiaw, Luang Prabang, and Muang Khua, it is very convenient to reach Muang Ngoi by boat. The transfer takes less than 3 hours and you are recommended to arrive at the station at least 30 minutes before the departure. Due to the small size of the area, you can go on foot, ride a bike or use a tuk-tuk to discover the lovely town.

Climate, the best time to visit

Muang Ngoi has a warm tropical climate with long and hot summers. Due to the high altitude, the winter here is cool. The best time to visit the region is during 5 months in the dry season from November to March when the weather is excellent for outdoor activities.
