Lake Yeak Laom

Yeak Laom is a volcanic lake lying deep in a peaceful forest in the protected area of Yeak Laom village in Ratanakiri province. This area is respected by many Khmer people and is considered a sacred place with many mysterious legends. Not as famous as other tourist attractions in Cambodia such as Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, Lake Yeak Laom still attracts visitors by its primitive and poetic beauty.

Yaek Laom was formed from a volcano many centuries ago with a diameter of about 800 meters and a depth of 50 meters of clear water during the dry season. Tourists coming here can raft or swim in the lake’s cool water. There are two places where tourists can relax and enjoy the stunning panoramic view of the lake along the banks. A tourist information center is situated on the west bank and local handicrafts made by hill tribes’ people are available for sale nearby. The path encircled by the lake offers a picturesque track for trekking. On the way, tourists may have the chance to see rare birds, wild pigs, colorful butterflies, or get a further trek to a local village to learn more about the people’s traditional lifestyle. Besides acting as a natural site, Lake Yeak Loam is also a worshipping place for local people, as they believe in the powerful spirit controlling the region.

The most convenient way to reach Lake Yeak Laom is by taking a private car from Phnom Penh with a stop to have a rest in Kratie.

Climate, the best time to visit

Like other parts of Laos, Lake Yeak Laom has a tropical climate with the dry season from November to February and the wet season from March to October. The average temperature of the region is from 24 °C to 32 °C. The best time to visit Lake Yeak Laom is the dry season when the weather is cool and sees less chance of rainfall.
