Located in the east of the Cardamom mountain ranges in Kampong Speu (around 117 kilometers from Phnom Penh),
Kirirom National Park is a well-preserved natural site surrounded by breathtaking cliffs, poetic hills, lush green trees, and sacred Buddhist temples. Due to the location, it is one of the popular spots on a day trip from
Phnom Penh.
The name “Kirirom” when translated into English means “Happy Mountain”. Before this name, the site was called Phnom Vorvong Sorvong based on the names of 2 princes of the kingdom. Later, King Monivong changed the name of the park to mark the first officially designated national park of
Cambodia. In recent years, the surrounding Kirirom National Park has been renovated with the development of many types of accommodations as well as ecotourism projects to protect the landscapes of the forests.
The most famous attractions of the region are the spectacular waterfalls where you can cool off among hot summer days and hike amidst the forest to explore the smaller ones located nearby. Additionally, you can participate in bird watching guided tours depending on the season, relax on a bamboo hut, camp at the picnic spots, and board a scenic boat ride in Kirirom Lake to admire the stunning view of the mountains. There are two levels of services at Kirirom that tourists can choose based on each one’s interest and budget: the resort-style hotels on the mountain and the local homestay at the ecotourism site at the bottom of the hills.
Kirirom is easily accessible by taking a private car from Phnom Penh and the ride takes around 3.5 hours.
Climate, the best time to visit
Kirirom has a desert tropical climate with an average temperature ranging from 30°C to 37°C. The best time to visit the national park is the months from October to February when the weather is pleasant and sees less chance of rainfall.
