Itinerary for 5 days in Vietnam start in Hanoi

If the North of Vietnam is your plan this time, it is much more convenient if you arrive at Noi Bai International Airport which is located just around 40-minute driving from the downtown of Hanoi. Depending on your flight’s arrival time, you can spend the first day at museums and other historic spots in Hanoi or wandering around the Old Quarter to get acquainted with the new environment.

For the next 2 days, it would be great to stay on an overnight cruise with some active outdoor activities to explore the world-famous Halong Bay.

For the last 2 days, you can consider spending 1 day discovering the tranquil town of Mai Chau before visiting Ninh Binh on the way back to Hanoi on the following day. Another option that you can consider besides Mai Chau and Ninh Binh is the breathtaking mountainous region of Sapa.

After getting back to Hanoi after the Halong Bay trip, you can take an overnight train to Sapa (via the Lao Cai station) where you have the chance to do trekking along beautiful routes, enjoy the spectacular view of the mountain, visit hill tribe villages and meet ethnic people.

Alternatively, if you arrive at Danang airport, you will have time to enjoy the Central part of Vietnam which is rich in cultural and historical sites.

The first 2 days can be spent in Hoi An to explore the ancient town, cruise on the Thu Bon River, and leisurely ride a bike to visit the countryside and a traditional handicraft village.

On the third day, you should visit My Son holy land (38km from Hoi An) for a half-day and spend the remaining time attending a cooking class or shopping around the town. For beach lovers, Hoi An is also an ideal hideaway with long pristine beaches and calm waves. You can shorten the time for sightseeing and relax more at the beach if you want.

For the last 2 days, you can visit Hue (120km from Hoi An) with the well-known Imperial Citadel, some royal tombs, the Perfume River, and stay overnight there. From both Hoi An and Hue, you will need to get back to Danang airport to take your flight out.

Itinerary for 5 days in Vietnam start in Ho Chi Minh City

In case your flight lands at Tan Son Nhat airport, you should spend the first day exploring Ho Chi Minh City with some highlights sightseeing including Independence Palace, War Remnants Museum, Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, and Dong Khoi Street before visiting Cu Chi Tunnels and Cao Dai Temple on the following day.

On the third day, you can travel to the Mekong Delta to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere on the boat trip along the river and have local interaction with friendly people living here. After that, you will continue the journey to reach Can Tho for an overnight stay.

You will get back to Ho Chi Minh City for the night stay to relax before spending the last day doing some shopping, to relax and get ready for the onward flight out.

If you have had visited the Mekong Delta in the previous trip, after the days visiting the city and the surroundings, you can take a direct flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat, the Central Highlands of Vietnam, or Nha Trang, one of the most picturesque stretches of coastline in the country.

North to South of Vietnam for 5 days itinerary

Lastly, if you do not mind spending more money on domestic flight tickets as well as the time getting in and out of the airport, you can even visit some of the most important destinations from North to South of Vietnam in 5 days.

The first day is for you to recover after the long flight and visit the main sightseeing places in Hanoi before exploring Halong Bay on an overnight cruise the next day.

Right after the trip in Halong ends on the third day, you will take the flight to Danang and overnight in Hoi An.
